Thats not too bad I guess. I've never gotten that bad in the wife's TDI and I will never get half that good in my cruiser. The universe is in balance. (got 12 this morning)

Using Gas Cubby on my iPhone, my average in the CRV is 20.2 MPG, mostly in dense urban traffic. My old Fit averaged 32.8. The difference is shocking. Something like $3,000 a year more.

I got bored on my commute last week and decided to see how much driving gently would improve my mileage. So, for the last week, I have been trying to be easy on the gas and the brakes, and upshift early... and that is about all the "hypermiling" I could get myself to do without wanting to kill myself (I still drive with the flow of traffic at about 5mph over the speed limit, and don't shut off the engine at stoplights or any bullshit like that).

So far, my mpg counter (which is typically optimistic by about 5%) is saying I am getting 40 mpg on the way to work (uphill) and around 54 on the way home (downhill), with an overall average around 45mpg. My commute is all city driving (though partially in a suburban area), with light to moderate traffic, and has a significant uphill section on the way to work. I normally average around 35 mpg when driving normally (i.e., "spiritedly"). I don't think I will make a habit of driving gently like this, but I am quite impressed that I was able to increase my average mileage by more than 10mpg, and that I was able to best my car's highway mpg rating with all city driving.

Oh yeah... I should add that I drive a Jetta TDI with the 6-speed.

342.3 miles on 9.9 gallons of unleaded at roughly $32. 34.5mpg. The tank before that was under 27mpg on the same route. Thus proving that it definitely matters how you drive.

~18 gallons premium

$75.00

Trip reading 387 (but varies)

9-12 MPG when having fun

14-16 typical commute to work (5 miles) Engine barely had time to get to normal operating temperature

20-22 MPG during a 330 trip to Vegas and being VERY gentle on the fun pedal or using cruise control locked in at 75mph or less.
